IRVING, Texas — Three BYU gymnasts have been named to the 2026 Big 12 Gymnastics Preseason Team, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
Honoring gymnasts in four events and the All-Around, seven programs were represented among the 30 selections. Selections were voted by head coaches who could not vote for their own gymnasts.
Junior Brynlee Andersen-Broekman was a unanimous selection for the Beam Team, while freshman Scarlett Sonnenberg and senior Kylie Eaquinto represented BYU as all-arounders.
Brynlee Andersen-Broekman
The Orem, Utah, native is earning her second straight Big 12 preseason nod after receiving unanimous selections in both seasons. Andersen qualified as an individual for nationals on beam for the first time in her career last season. Scoring a 9.9 on beam both days at regionals, she became BYU’s first individual national qualifier since 2021. Competing at the national semifinal, she earned a 9.825 for a 16th-place finish to cap off her successful sophomore season. With an NQS of 9.905 and a national beam ranking of No. 24, Andersen earned several Big 12 honors. She received Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week three times and was named the 2025 Big 12 Co-Event Specialist of the Year. Andersen was also named to the All-Big 12 Beam Team after notching eight scores of 9.9 or higher.
Kylie Eaquinto
Earning her first Big 12 preseason selection, Eaquinto represented the Cougars as an all-arounder ahead of the 2026 gymnastics season. As BYU’s only senior, she brings three years of veteran experience as one of the team’s four captains. Last season, Eaquinto qualified for regionals on vault and bars as an individual for the second time in her career and recorded BYU’s highest individual floor score of 9.925 for the second straight year. She also earned her first Big 12 Gymnast of the Week award in Week 8. Eaquinto competed on vault and bars in every meet and on floor in all but one, posting eight straight weeks with all three event scores at 9.8 or higher to close out the 2025 season. For the first time in her career, Eaquinto competed in the all-around three times last year, earning a season-high 39.050 at Oregon State.
Scarlett Sonnenberg
The Saratoga Springs, Utah, native joins the BYU gymnastics squad for her freshman season in 2026. As BYU’s first five-star gymnastics recruit, Sonnenberg will compete in the all-around after becoming the 2025 DP all-around national champion before starting her collegiate career. She brings five state titles and two national titles to Provo and is eager to compete for the Cougars as a true freshman.
