PHILADELPHIA – Zoey Bonds won two events in the pentathlon, finishing third overall on the first day of the Penn Elite Invitational on Friday.
Zoey Bonds delivered a strong start to the pentathlon, winning the 60-meter hurdles and high jump events. She clocked an 8.39 in the hurdles, finishing 0.2 seconds ahead of second place, while Tia Brown took third with an 8.64. Bonds followed with a winning clearance of 1.72m/5-7.75 in the high jump.
"I was really proud of Zoey and Tia in their performances of the pentathlon," jumps & multis coach Tiffany Hogan said. "Zoey had a massive personal best in the 800m to close off her pentathlon with a mark just shy of her personal-best overall score. She is showing remarkable maturity in the combined event."
Brown answered with a personal-best mark of 11.20m/36-9 in the shot put to earn fourth place, while Bonds recorded a throw of 10.25m/33-7.5 to place 12th.
Momentum continued in the long jump as Bonds posted another top-three finish with a leap of 5.98m/19-7.5. Brown added a seventh-place finish, clearing 5.63m/18-5.75.
The freshman closed the day with a personal best in the 800m, crossing in 2:21.98 for eighth. Bonds followed closely in 2:22.60 to finish 10th.
"Tia has shown that she can compete as a D1 athlete," Hogan continued. "She is a freshman and is picking up on the nuances of the combined event. Tia was able to get a personal best in her shot put and 800m."
Bonds’ 4,098 points gave her third overall, while Brown totaled 3,866 points to finish sixth.
