PROVO, Utah — BYU baseball is on the road this week in San Diego for the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament hosted by San Diego State, Feb. 19-21. 

TONY GWYNN LEGACY. Game one versus Nebraska-Omaha, originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 19 at Tony Gwynn Stadium was canceled due to rain.

The Cougars will now face former conference colleague SDSU on Friday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. PT (7 p.m. MT) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The final game of the tournament versus UC San Diego is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. PT (4 p.m. MT). 

BROADCAST PLANS. The games will be broadcast live on BYUradio.org, the BYUradio app and in Utah County on 107.9 FM. Matt Baiamonte will have the live play-by-play radio call. Friday's game with the Aztecs will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network, while Saturday’s game at UCSD will air on ESPN+ from Triton Ballpark. David Gentile will be on the call for both games.

KNOW THE FOE. 
Nebraska-Omaha (1-3)
• Omaha opened the 2026 season in Arizona, dropping three games at ASU (2-7, 5-11, 4-6) in Tempe, before defeating Arizona (3-1) in Tucson
• BYU leads the all-time series with the Mavericks, 5-3
• The Cougars won the last series with Omaha, 2-1, in Provo, March 2-4, 2023
San Diego State (3-0)
• SDSU swept LIU (12-11, 12-5, 6-5) in a three-game series at home last week 
• The Aztecs lead the all-time series with BYU, 57-42-1
• SDSU won the last meeting on May 7, 2019, in San Diego, 10-5
UC San Diego (1-2)
• UCSD opened the 2026 season with a three-game series at UCLA, dropping the first two games (4-8, 2-7) before winning game three (8-7) 
• The Tritons lead the all-time series with BYU, 1-0
• UCSD won the only meeting on May 3, 2023, in San Diego, 3-0

SCOUTING THE COUGS. BYU returns 22 players from its 2025 roster, including seven of its eight starting position players and nine pitchers with game experience. In addition, the Cougars added five pitchers in the offseason with collegiate innings. 

BYU returns an offensive lineup that accounted for 71 percent of the team’s plate appearance in 2025. The Cougars averaged 7.4 runs per game last year and finished top six in the Big 12 in runs (408), triples (16) and doubles (119). Defensively, BYU returns a core group that recorded a school-record fielding percentage of .978 and finished the season top 25 nationally and top three in the Big 12 in double plays (49) and fielding percentage. 

RECAPPING WEEK ONE. BYU is coming off a split in its four-game series with Western Kentucky, Feb. 13-16, at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green. The Cougars won game one of the series with a come-from-behind 3-2 win in the ninth inning. After dropping games two (5-3) and three (4-2), the BYU bats came alive in game four for a 12-8 win and a series split. 

Five Cougars hit over .300 in the series including left fielder Ryker Schow who hit .429 with a home run, four RBI and five runs scored. Second baseman Luke Anderson, centerfielder Crew McChesney and first baseman Ezra McNaughten each hit .333 while starting all four games. McNaughten led the Cougars with two home runs and six RBI in the series, while McChesney also recorded two home runs, two RBI and scored twice. Anderson also scored twice and collected two doubles. 

On the hill, lefty Ashton Johnson got the win in game one, going 6.1 innings in relief while surrendering just one run and scattering five hits for a 1.42 ERA. Cayson Bell picked up the win in game four, coming out of the bullpen to pitch 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball while giving up just one hit. Nate Wochner entered the ninth inning in game four with the bases loaded and got the final two outs for the save. 

ON DECK. Following the weekend series in San Diego, the Cougars will travel north up the coast to Riverside and Long Beach, California, for five games with UC Riverside, Long Beach State (2), and Washington State (2), February 21-28.
