PROVO, Utah — The men’s tennis team improved to 9-0 for the first time in program records dating back to 2000 with a 4-3 win over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon.
“I thought Idaho State came out fighting really, really well today and made the match super difficult,” assistant coach Jonathan Sanchez said. “One thing we did really well was compete. I don’t think we played our best tennis, but we fought hard. We dug deep to win some tight matches and played the big points well in order to close it out today.”
BYU secured the doubles point with a win from the new pairing of Hardy Owen and David Duong, who made his first doubles appearance of the season, earning a 6-3 victory. While the Cougars trailed 3-5 on Court one, the match was left unfinished after one of BYU’s most experienced pairings, TJ Wells and Tygen Goldammer, clinched a 7-5 win.
Up 1-0, the Cougars turned to singles, where Goldammer was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Next, Caden Hasler continued his strong season with a 6-3 win and a 3-0 lead before the match was retired due to injury.
With the score at 3-0, Idaho State battled back on Courts one and three. The Bengals dropped the first set on both courts but evened the matches with a pair of 6-3 wins before completing the comebacks to cut the score to 3-2.
Attention then turned to Wells, who swept both sets to secure the victory for the Cougars. With the match decided, Idaho State closed out the final point with a tight 10-7 tiebreak win over Brennon Chow, who made his singles debut this season.
