IRVING, Texas – Jane Hedengren earned Big 12 Women’s Athlete of the Week honors after her performance at the Millrose Games over the weekend, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
The true freshman earned the honor after clocking the No. 2 all-time NCAA mark in the 3000m, finishing third in 8:34.98. Hedengren’s time would have set the NCAA record if Alabama’s Doris Lemngole had not won in 8:31.39. Hedengren previously set the NCAA record in the 5000m at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in early December.
Her Millrose performance also broke BYU’s program record in the 3000m, surpassing Lexy Halladay-Lowry’s previous mark by nearly six seconds. The Provo, Utah native now holds the top time in BYU history in both the 3000m and 5000m.
The honor marks Hedengren’s first Big 12 weekly award of the indoor track and field season and her second since cross country.
