PROVO, Utah — Fresh off an 18-5 win at Utah Tech in St. George on Tuesday evening, BYU heads east to Morgantown, West Virginia, to take on the No. 20 ranked Mountaineers in a three-game Big 12 series scheduled for March 19-21 at Kendrick Family Ballpark. WVU is 13-4 on the year and tied with BYU at 2-1 in conference play.
DATES & TIMES. Thursday’s game is set for 4:30 p.m. ET with Friday’s contest at 2:00 p.m. ET and Saturday’s game scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.
BROADCAST PLANS. All three games of the West Virginia series will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and will also be available on BYUradio.org and on the BYU Radio app.
COUGAR REWIND. BYU is 9-8 on the year and 4-1 in its last five games over an eight-day stretch. Those five games include a 2-1 Big 12 series win over Cincinnati (5-2, 7-9, 10-9) in the opening week of conference play. The Cougars are also 2-0 versus in-state foe Utah Tech, defeating the Trailblazers 19-2 in Provo on March 10 and winning game two of the season series 18-5 in St. George on March 17. The bat cats scored 37 runs on 40 hits in two games with UTU.
BYU has rolled up 59 runs on 69 hits, including 15 home runs, 12 doubles and 56 RBI in the last five games. During that stretch, the Cougars hit .365 with a slugging percentage of .677 and an on base percentage of .440.
Pitching has also been solid with 15 different hurlers over 45 innings combining to hold opposing hitters to a .276 average while striking out 44. Garrison Sumner, Austin Park, Ethan Zufall and Nate Gray all picked up wins, while Ashton Johnson recorded a save.
SERIES HISTORY. BYU and West Virginia have met in baseball just six times, all coming during Big 12 Conference play. The Mountaineers currently lead the series 4-2.
BYU faced WVU in its first baseball series as a member of the Big 12, March 7-9, 2024. The Mountaineers took two of the three games (10-4, 4-1, 2-0), but BYU won game two of the series for its first-ever Big 12 baseball victory. West Virginia traveled to Provo in 2025 with similar results as the Cougars won the first game (14-5,) but dropped the final two games of the series (20-6, 19-16).
KNOW THE FOE. West Virginia enters the weekend series with a 13-4 record, tied with BYU at 2-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers took two of three games from Baylor in Waco last weekend and have won five of their last six.
WVU won the Big 12 Conference regular season title in 2025. After falling to eventual champion Arizona in the semifinals at the 2025 Big 12 Baseball Championship, the Mountaineers went on to win the NCAA Clemson Regional before falling to No. 6 LSU in the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional.
BIG 12 TEAM STATS. WVU enters the weekend series hitting .316 as a team, good for fourth-best in the Big 12. BYU checks in at .295, good for seventh. On the hill, the Mountaineers currently lead the conference with a team ERA of 3.14 while the Cougars are 11th at 5.79.
ON DECK. Following the weekend series at West Virginia, BYU will return home to face Utah in a midweek non-conference game on March 24 at the recently completed America First Ballpark in Salt Lake City. The Cougars will then welcome Oklahoma State to Provo for a weekend series, March 26-28.
