WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The BYU women’s gymnastics team earned a third-place finish at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship presented by Allstate at the Maverik Center Saturday night with a score of 196.175.
The Utah Utes won their second-straight Big 12 Championship with a 197.675. Denver came in second with a 196.575, followed by BYU (196.175) and Arizona 194.725.
After struggling in the first two rotations, the Cougars turned a corner and finished strong on floor (49.475) and vault (49.025).
With a career-high 9.950 on floor, freshman Scarlett Sonnenberg tied for second amongst all four teams on floor. Deb Silva tied for third on vault with a 9.875 and Brynlee Andersen-Broekman tied for fourth on beam with a 9.900.
The Cougars opened the championship on the uneven bars. Addilyn Glazier got things started with a 9.825, her highest score in six weeks. Kylie Eaquinto, Ava Jorgensen and Alilah Alvarado each notched a 9.750 to round out the rotation.
With a bars score of 48.775, the Cougars headed into the second rotation in fourth place. Utah led with a 49.375, followed by Arizona (49.325) and Denver (49.050).
BYU moved to beam in the second rotation, scoring a 48.900. Jorgensen posted a 9.800, followed by Andersen-Broekman’s 9.900. Chloee Hoke anchored the rotation with a 9.775.
At the halfway point, Denver led with a 98.450, followed by Utah (98.425), Arizona (98.075) and BYU (97.675).
The Cougars found their groove on floor in the third rotation, scoring a 49.475. Sonnenberg, Daisy Stephenson and Andersen-Broekman opened with career highs of 9.950, 9.925 and 9.900, respectively. Silva and Eaquinto each added a 9.850, and freshman Zoe Hale scored a 9.750 in her collegiate debut.
Heading into the final rotation, Utah regained the lead with a 147.950, followed by Denver (147.475). After a strong floor rotation, BYU moved ahead of Arizona into third place with a 147.150. Arizona rounded out the group with a 145.475.
BYU closed out the competition with a 49.025 on vault. Mya Kirkham scored a 9.800 to get the vault rotation going. Jorgensen earned a 9.825 and Silva notched a 9.875. Hale closed out the competition for the Cougars with her first-ever vault, scoring a 9.775.
