WEEKEND REVIEW. Despite dropping three games to Cal Baptist (14-3) last weekend, the BYU (6-8) offense continues to heat up, scoring 24 runs in the three-game series at Miller Park. Six Cougars hit .300 or better in the series, including senior outfielder Ryker Hurdsman who was 7-for-13 with two home runs, five RBI and scored four runs.
Three Cougars enter Tuesday’s matchup with Utah Tech hitting over .300 on the year. Sophomore outfielder/first baseman Ezra McNaughton has started all 14 games and is hitting .375 with five home runs, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. Cooper Jones, a true freshman, has played in eight games and is hitting .320 with two homers, two doubles and 10 RBI. Starting centerfielder Crew McChesney is hitting .300 with three home runs, three doubles and two triples, while driving in nine runs and scoring nine times.
SERIES HISTORY. BYU and Utah Tech will meet for the 21st time on Tuesday. The instate foes have met twice each season since the Trailblazers joined the Division I ranks in 2021. The Cougars hold a 16-4 series advantage with both teams winning on the road in 2025 for a 1-1 season series split.
SOUTHERN UTAH ROOTS. BYU’s roster includes five St. George or Santa Clara natives. The five southern Utah natives hail from three different high school programs.
Hurdsman began his collegiate career at Utah Tech in 2023 before transferring to BYU. The Desert Hills High School alum started 22 games for the Trailblazers, hitting .299 and recording 16 RBI as a freshman. Hurdsman and Payton Gubler were teammates on Desert Hills' 2019 state championship team.
Ridge Erickson and Cayson Bell were teammates at Dixie High School where they led the Flyers to the 2022 Region Title. Luke Anderson earned the state’s 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year and Deseret News Mr. Baseball honors while helping Snow Canyon High School to a state title.
KNOW THE FOE. Utah Tech completed its fifth NCAA Division I season in 2025 with a 24-31 overall record and finished eighth in the Western Athletic Conference at 9-15. The Trailblazers are currently in second place in the 2026 WAC baseball standings behind Cal Baptist who has just one more win.
Chris Pfatenhauer is in his 14th season as the head baseball coach at Utah Tech. The Trailblazers are off to a hot start at 13-3 and are currently 6-2 at home and 7-1 on the road. They opened the 2026 campaign by sweeping UC Riverside, 4-0, then made it five straight with a win at CSU Bakersfield. A 2-1 series win at Pacific, followed by a 4-0 sweep of Northern Colorado at home and a 2-2 weekend split with Austin Peay leaves Utah Tech at 13-3 on the season.
