PROVO, Utah — After sweeping Houston in a three-game Big 12 series April 9-11, BYU remains in Texas and will travel east from Houston to Beaumont to take on Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Monday, April 13 at 6:05 p.m. CT. 

BROADCAST PLANS. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM 143 and 107.9 FM in Utah County. 

WEEKEND RECAP. BYU is coming off its first Big 12 sweep in school history with wins of 3-2, 6-2 and 6-1 over Houston at Schroeder Park. Although the offense scored 15 runs in the three-game series, the story for the Cougars in Houston was pitching.

Senior pitchers Wayland Crane and Garrison Sumner combined to hold Houston to just three hits and two runs in game one, while striking out 10 for the win on Thursday. On Friday night, Justis Reiser, Dan Brousseau and Ashton Johnson combined to scatter seven UH hits while allowing just two runs, in the Cougars second win in as many nights. 

Cayson Bell got the start Saturday, going 4.1 innings while scattering six hits and surrendering just one run. Nate Gray came on in relief, pitching 2.2 innings with no earned runs for the win, his sixth on the year. Gray is now tied for the Big 12 lead in wins. Dan Brousseau and Tyler Ball combined to hold UH hitless in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win.

Led by Easton Jones, who hit .462 with six hits, three RBI, two runs and a pair of doubles, the BYU offense collectively hit .275 in the series with three home runs, seven doubles, 15 RBI and 46 total bases.

PREVIEWING THE MATCHUP. BYU is 18-16 on the year and 8-7 in conference play, good for a tie for fifth with TCU and Baylor in the Big 12 standings at the midway point of conference season. The Cougars are 6-4 over the last 10 games and enter Monday’s contest on a four-game winning streak, the longest of the year. 

Meanwhile Lamar enters the Monday evening matchup at 19-17 and are 11-7 in the Southland Conference, tied for third place. The Cardinals are 3-7 in their last 10 games with a one game winning streak. They are 12-8 at home this season. 

SERIES HISTORY. BYU and Lamar will meet for the fifth time in baseball on Monday. BYU leads the series 3-2 with the first meeting between the two schools at the 1979 NCAA Central Regional held in Austin, Texas, May 25-29. BYU lost to Lamar 2-3 in the first game of the regional but won the second meeting 7-4 to advance to the regional finals against Texas. The teams met again February 28-Match 2, 2019 at Lamar, where the Cougars won the series 2-1 (4-2, 1-3, 4-0). 

UP NEXT. BYU heads home for a three-game conference series with No. 19 ranked ASU, April 16-18 at Miller Park. At 9-6 in Big 12 play, the Sun Devils aare one game ahead of the Cougars in the conference race.
