Mansfield, Mares earn CSC Academic All-District honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — BYU softball student-athletes Miranda Mansfield and Gianna Mares were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Tuesday morning.

Recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom, nominees for the award must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played or start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. Pitchers must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings.

Mansfield, a communication studies graduate with a 3.65 GPA, started 34 of 46 games played in this season, primarily at third and second base. The Clearfield, Utah product tallied 15 hits, 13 runs, nine walks and five sacrifice bunts, with a .966 fielding percentage.

Mares has posted a 3.86 GPA as a marketing major. A Tucson, Arizona native, she led the team with eight wins, five complete games, 109.2 innings pitched and 107 strikeouts. The southpaw also started a team-high 23 games, recording two saves and one shutout.
