PROVO, Utah. – No. 18-seeded BYU will aim for its second NCAA men’s golf championship title beginning May 28 at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California.
The Cougar lineup will feature Kihei Akina, Parker Bunn, Peter Kim, Simon Kwon and Tyson Shelley. Jackson Mauss will be with the team as a sub.
BYU will part of a 30-team field that includes top-ranked Auburn, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Virginia, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 7 LSU, No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 11 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Arizona, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 14 Pepperdine, No. 15 Stanford, No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 23 Georgia. The rest of the competition includes Florida State, USC, Duke, UCLA, Louisville, Mississippi State, Arkansas State, Purdue, San Diego, Chattanooga and Memphis.
The 156-player field will also consist of six individuals from No. 19 Alabama, No. 25 Long Beach State, Louisiana, Liberty, UTRGV and Kentucky.
The tournament opens with a 72-hole stroke play battle. BYU will compete Thursday through Saturday for a top-15 spot before the final round of stroke play on Monday. If the Cougars finish in the top-8 after stroke play, they will advance to the match play portion Tuesday and Wednesday to determine the National Champion.
BYU last won the national title in 1981 at Stanford Golf Course. In their 34th appearance, the Cougars will look for their second championship trophy.
