MIDWAY, Utah – BYU men’s golfers David Liechty and Jackson Mauss won their Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches at the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship on Thursday to move on to the quarterfinals.
Liechty earned a 4 and 2 victory in his opening match, winning the first three holes and six of the front nine. After dropping holes six and 10 in the Round of 16, the sophomore responded by winning holes 13, 15 and 17 to secure a 2-and-1 victory.
Mauss defeated BYU alumnus Cole Ogden 1 up in the Round of 32 by winning holes one, four, five and 10. He then overcame a 1-down deficit after nine holes by winning holes 11 and 17 to advance with another 1-up victory.
Incoming freshman Austin Shelley defeated future teammate Lincoln Markham 2 and 1 in the Round of 32. After splitting the first two holes of his Round of 16 match, Shelley fell 2 and 1.
Angus Klintworth advanced to the Round of 16 with a 3-and-2 victory before a 19th-hole loss to Art City Amateur champion Cameron Crawford ended his tournament run.
Sophomore Parker Bunn and former Cougar David Timmins lost their Round of 32 matches and did not advance.
The championship continues Friday with the quarterfinals and semifinals. Liechty will face Arizona State golfer Bowen Mauss, Jackson’s younger brother and the defending Utah State Amateur champion, in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. MT. Jackson Mauss will face Crawford at 8:30 a.m. MT.
