BERTHOUD, Colo. — BYU men’s golfer Kihei Akina and former Cougars Carson Lundell and Daniel Summerhays missed the cut at the Korn Ferry Tour’s The Blue Championship on Friday at TPC Colorado.
Akina opened the first round with bogeys on holes 12 and 13 before rebounding with birdies on holes 15 and 16 to make the turn at even par. Birdies on holes one, three and four moved him to 3 under, but a triple bogey on the eighth hole dropped him to an even-par 72 on day one.
The sophomore carded a 2-under 70 in the second round. Akina posted birdies on holes one, four and seven on the front nine before adding another on No. 15. Bogeys on holes 16 and 17 left him needing a birdie at the last to make the cut. His birdie putt on 18 lipped out, leaving him at 2-under through 36 holes, one shot outside the cut line.
Lundell opened with a 2-under 70 in the first round, highlighted by an eagle, and several birdies. He posted a 3-over 75 in the second round to finish at 1-over 145.
Summerhays started the championship with an even-par 72, recording two birdies and two bogeys. He followed with a 1-over 73 in the second round to finish at 1-over 145.
The top 65 players and ties advanced to the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday. The cut line was 3 under, leaving Akina, Lundell and Summerhays just outside the field.
