MIDWAY, Utah — Angus Klintworth holds a share of the lead after the opening round of the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship and is one of five current BYU men’s golfers in the top 64 after 18 holes on Monday.
Klintworth fired a 6-under 66 on the Soldier Hollow Silver Course to lead the field. The native of South Africa opened with an eagle on hole two and birdies on holes six, eight and nine to finish 5-under par on his opening nine holes. After bogeys on holes 13 and 15, Klintworth carded a birdie on 16, followed by a closing eagle on 18 to finish 6-under on the day.
Parker Bunn carded a 2-under 70 on Soldier Hollow Gold Course with five birdies and three bogeys, sitting tied for 21st. Incoming freshman Lincoln Markham and Utah Tech transfer David Liechty each shot a 1-under 71, putting them in a tie for 35th after the opening day.
After sitting at 4-over par through four holes, rising sophomore Jackson Mauss carded three birdies, an eagle and a bogey in his final 14 holes to post an even-par 72. Mauss sits in a tie for 52nd with 18 holes remaining in the stroke play qualifying.
BYU women’s golfer Whitney Banz, the fifth woman ever to qualify for the Utah Men’s State Amateur Championship, carded an 8-over 80 on the Gold Course.
Four former Cougars also began play on Monday. David Timmins came in at 4-under par, finishing with six birdies and two bogeys to sit tied for eighth with 18 holes to play.
Cole Ogden, the 2013 Utah State Amateur Champion, finished at even-par to sit inside the projected cut line. Jordan Rodgers and Brad Sutterfield also competed, finishing at 1-over and 6-over, respectively.
Play will resume on Tuesday with the second and final round of stroke play qualifying, which will determine the 64 golfers who advance to the match-play bracket, beginning on Wednesday.
