MIDWAY, Utah – Incoming freshman Austin Shelley and rising senior Angus Klintworth tied for second at the conclusion of stroke-play qualifying at the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship on Tuesday.
All six current BYU men’s golfers competing in the championship finished inside the top 64 and will move on to match play, with four placing in the top eight.
Shelley shot an 8-under 67 on the Gold Course in the second round. After opening with a birdie on hole one and an eagle on hole four, the incoming freshman added three more birdies on holes seven, 11 and 12 before a bogey on hole 15. Combined with his 3-under 69 on Monday, the Utah native finished stroke play at 8-under par.
Klintworth built on his momentum from Monday, carding a 2-under 70 on the Gold Course to match Shelley's 8-under total. He opened with a birdie on hole two before a bogey on hole five. After birdies on holes seven, 11 and 12, Klintworth made a bogey on hole 16 to complete the second round.
Sophomores Jackson Mauss and Parker Bunn tied for fourth after stroke play. Mauss fired a 6-under 66, recording five birdies and an eagle on hole 17 before a double bogey on the 18th. Bunn carded a 4-under 68 with five birdies and one bogey to finish at 6-under during stroke play.
Incoming transfer David Liechty shot a 4-under 68 in the second round to finish tied for ninth, while Lincoln Markham turned in an even-par 72 to tie for 29th and secure a spot in match play.
Two former Cougars also advanced to the match-play rounds. David Timmins finished tied for fourth after shooting a 2-under 70, while Cole Ogden finished tied for 21st with a 2-under 70.
BYU women’s golfer Whitney Banz carded a 3-over 75 and did not qualify for the match-play portion of the championship. BYU alumni Jordan Rodgers and Brad Sutterfield also finished outside the top 64 and did not advance.
