All six BYU men’s golfers reach Round of 32 at 128th Utah State Amateur

Austin Shelley, Angus Klintworth, Jackson Mauss, Parker Bunn, David Liechty and Lincoln Markham each won their opening-round match to advance to the Round of 32 at the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship.

MIDWAY, Utah – BYU men’s golfers Austin Shelley, Angus Klintworth, Jackson Mauss, Parker Bunn, David Liechty and Lincoln Markham all won their opening-round matches at the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship on Wednesday.

After qualifying for match play by finishing among the top 64 during stroke-play qualifying, all six Cougars advanced to Thursday’s Round of 32.

Shelley, who tied for second in stroke-play qualifying, traded birdies with Dallin Anderson on holes two and three before winning holes five and six to take a 2-up lead through the front nine. Despite Anderson’s three straight wins on holes 10, 11 and 12, Shelley answered by winning the final two holes to close out a 1-up victory.

Klintworth capitalized on his opponent’s mistakes, winning holes one, five, six, 13 and 14 to secure a 5-and-4 victory. Mauss played equally well, winning his match 8 and 7.

Bunn traded holes back and forth, winning holes six, seven, 10 and 12 while dropping holes five, eight, 13 and 14. The sophomore pulled away by winning three straight holes, Nos. 15, 16 and 17, to earn a 3-and-1 victory.

Incoming transfer Liechty trailed by two holes after the front nine before winning five of six holes on the back nine to take the match 3 and 2. Markham, who recently returned from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, won the opening two holes before trading holes with his opponent on the back nine, ultimately pulling away for a 2-and-1 victory.

BYU alumni David Timmins and Cole Ogden also advanced with 5-and-4 and 3-and-1 victories, respectively, rounding out a strong performance by current and former Cougars.
