Bunn earns a spot in the Utah Open with third place finish at qualifier

MIDWAY, Utah — BYU men’s golfer Parker Bunn shot a 4-under 68 at the Soldier Hollow Gold Course on Monday to finish third at the Utah Open qualifier and earn a spot for the Larry H. Miller Utah Open.

Bunn’s 4-under performance earned him one of 10 qualifying spots available for the Larry H. Miller Utah Open, which begins Friday at Riverside Country Club. Ten additional spots were awarded through a qualifier on Soldier Hollow’s Silver Course.

“It’s always a good feeling to come out and earn my spot,” Bunn said. “I love competing and proving myself. I knew coming in that if I just did the simple things well, I would be in a good spot.”

Bunn opened the round with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 3. After a bogey on No. 4, the sophomore added another birdie on No. 7 to make the turn at 3 under. Bunn made a birdie on No. 12 and played the rest of the round without a bogey to finish with a 4-under 68.

BYU alumnus Justin Keiley also qualified, carding a 3-under 69. After opening the round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3, he offset a birdie on No. 7 with a bogey on No. 8. Keiley made three consecutive birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 13 to move to 5 under, but bogeys on Nos. 14 and 18 dropped him to 3 under and into a tie for fourth.

Former Cougar Robbie Fillmore missed qualifying by one stroke, tying for 12th with a 1-under 71.

Bunn and Keiley will join seven other current BYU men’s golfers and 19 former Cougars at the Larry H. Miller Utah Open, which begins Friday at Riverside Country Club.
