GUADALAJARA, Mexico — BYU guard Delaney Gibb and Team Canada defeated Mexico 83-53 in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament final on Sunday to secure a spot in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2028.
Despite scoring just three points, Gibb recorded four of Canada’s seven steals in the championship game. The Raymond, Alberta, native also contributed three rebounds and two assists in the 30-point victory.
Canada shot 48 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent from behind the arc, making 10 triples on the night. The Canadians assisted on 26 of their 30 field goals — an 86.7 percent assist rate — and out-rebounded Mexico 49-30.
Of the 12 Canadian players who saw action Sunday night, 10 scored, including four in double figures. Thirty-eight of Canada’s 83 points came from the bench, compared to just eight from the host nation.
Canada opened with a dominant first quarter, outscoring Mexico 26-11 to build an early 15-point lead. A 21-15 second quarter extended Canada's advantage to 47-26 at halftime, and the Canadians stretched the margin to 31 points through three quarters. The 18 Canadian points in the fourth quarter capped the 30-point victory.
With the victory, Canada advances to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in February 2028, the final stage of qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
