THE COUGARS. No. 15 BYU women’s soccer (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated USC 2-0 at the home opener on Saturday, Aug. 22. After being tied 0-0 for much of the game, junior Emma Hamberlin broke through, scoring both of BYU’s goals and first Cougar brace of the season. Hamberlin’s goals Saturday night were the first of her college career, earning four points on the night. Hamberlin’s second goal was a finalist for the IWSOC Goal of the Week. Afton Perry and Sophie Sivulich both picked up assists as well. The Cougars are now 2-1 against Big Ten opponents to open the season.
THE GOLDEN GOPHERS. Minnesota (2-0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) has remained undefeated through the first three games of the season, last playing North Dakota State and winning 2-1. Senior forward Ava Westlund scored a second-half brace to take home the win. The Golden Gophers dominated offensively with 18 shots compared to North Dakota State’s four.
COUGARS VS. GOLDEN GOPHERS. BYU and Minnesota have played three times, with the Cougars leading the series 3-0. The teams last played in the 2025 season opener at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. After Avery Frischknecht received a red card, the Cougars played with just 10 players on the pitch for 60 minutes of the match. The Golden Gophers took an early lead, but BYU scored three unanswered goals to bring home the 3-1 road victory against then-No. 24 Minnesota.
