ARDMORE, Pa. — BYU men’s golfers Kihei Akina and Drake Harvey and former Cougar Tyson Shelley will compete at the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship beginning Monday at Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club.
The tournament begins with 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, featuring a field of 312 players. The top 64 will advance to the match play bracket to be played over the following four days, Aug. 12-15. A 36-hole final will be played on Sunday, Aug. 16, to determine the champion.
Akina earned an exemption as the No.11-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. His standout freshman season featured 11 top-10 finishes and two tournament victories, and he enters the U.S. Amateur fresh off a made cut at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship. The sophomore looks to improve on his performance at the 2025 U.S. Amateur, where he carded a 9-over 149 over 36 holes.
Harvey and Shelley qualified for the championship after earning top-4 finishes at the U.S. Amateur final qualifying on July 13 in Salt Lake City. Shelley earned medalist honors after shooting a 5-under 66, while Harvey finished third with a 3-under 68.
