GREENSBORO, N.C. — BYU men’s golfer Kihei Akina and former Cougar Patrick Fishburn made the cut Friday at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.
Akina shot 3-under over the opening 36 holes to make the cut on the number. Starting on the back nine, he opened the first round with a bogey on No. 10. The sophomore responded with birdies on Nos. 12, 13, 15 and 18 to move to 3 under before the turn. Akina offset bogeys on Nos. 2, 4 and 6 with birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 8 to finish the opening round with a 3-under 67.
Akina carded an even-par 70 in the second round. He opened with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 6 brought him back to level par. After making the turn, he followed a birdie on No. 10 with a bogey on No. 11. He added a birdie on No. 15 to move to 1 under but gave the shot back with a bogey on the final hole, finishing the round at even par.
BYU alumnus Fishburn shot consecutive 68s to finish 4 under through 36 holes. After bogeys on Nos. 10 and 12 moved him to 2 over early in the opening round, Fishburn responded with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to return to even par. On the front nine, he added birdies on Nos. 4 and 5 to finish with a 2-under 68.
In the second round, Fishburn made a birdie on No. 5 to move to 1 under. He answered a bogey on No. 7 with a birdie on No. 9 before the turn. Fishburn added another birdie on No. 15 and finished with a 2-under 68, two strokes inside the cut line.
Former Cougar Zac Blair also competed in the tournament but missed the cut by one stroke. He shot rounds of 68 and 70 to finish at 2 under.
