PROVO, Utah — After its 28-17 Big 12 win over Arizona on Saturday, BYU football moved up four spots to No. 11 in The Associated Press Top 25 released on Sunday.
Voters in this week's US LBM Coaches Poll administered by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) advanced the Cougars two places to No. 13 from the No. 15 ranking BYU received in both major polls last week.
The Cougars entered the year in the preseason polls ranked 15th by the coaches and tied for No. 14 with USC by AP voters, which marked the second-highest preseason AP ranking for BYU in program history (No. 10 in 1985). After dropping back to No. 15 following its 63-7 season-opening win over Utah Tech, BYU now returns to the same slot in the AP poll where it finished last season at No. 11 following a 12-2 season and Pop-Tarts Bowl title.
BYU (2-0) is one of four BIg 12 teams ranked in both the national polls this week. AP voters moved BYU past Texas Tech (2-0) this week with the Red Raiders staying at No. 13, while the coaches moved Tech up one place to No. 12, just in front of the Cougars. Utah (2-0), meanwhile, advanced three places to No. 17 in both rankings and Houston (2-0) was rated at No. 22 by AP and No. 23 by the AFCA. Oklahoma State (1-1), who upset top-10 Oregon on Saturday, Arizona (1-1), who fell to BYU, and Kansas State (2-0) all recived votes in both polls while falling outside the top 25.
Texas (2-0) is the new No. 1 team in both rankings, coming off its victory over previous No. 1 Ohio State (1-1). The Buckeyes fell five spots to No. 6., while Georgia (2-0), Notre Dame (2-0), Indiana (2-0) and Miami (2-0) round out the top 5 in both rankings.
Historically, BYU has been ranked 307 times overall in the AP poll since the program's first national ranking in 1974. The Cougars have been ranked in each of the last 16 AP polls released since entering last year's AP rankings at No. 25 with a 3-0 record.
