SAN DIEGO — No. 23 BYU men’s golf finished fourth at 12-over-par at the Vuori Invitational at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club on Tuesday.
Sophomore Kihei Akina (71-70-69-210) shot a 3-under 210 over three rounds to finish second and lead the Cougars. Parker Bunn (71-73-72-216) tied for 14th at 3 over, while Austin Shelley (73-74-72-219) tied for 22nd at 6-over par to round out BYU’s top-25 finishers.
“This is a young team we put in the lineup this week, with three sophomores and two freshmen,” head coach Todd Miller said. "I knew we would have some growing pains, but I’m glad these guys got to experience a really tough golf course. Each of them has a clear picture of what they need to do to get better. Even though I don’t like finishing fourth, I’m excited about this team going forward.”
Akina shot a 2-under 69 in the final round, making consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 before playing the remainder of the round at even par. He finished at 3 under to earn the eighth top-five finish of his career.
Bunn fired a 1-over 72 in the final round, making four birdies and five bogeys. He finished at 3 over to earn the second top-15 finish of his career.
Shelley carded a 1-over 72 in the final round of his collegiate debut, finishing at 6 over and tying for 22nd.
Freshman Drake Harvey (74-72-74–220) shot a 3-over 74 in the final round and tied for 28th at 7 over, while Jackson Mauss (73-74-78–225) tied for 49th at 12 over.
Competing as an individual, sophomore David Liechty (73-82-70-225) shot an 1-under 70 in the final round to tie for 49th at 12 over.
No. 10 Arkansas (284-283-285-852) won the team title at even par. Colorado (287-285-281-853) finished second at 1 over, while USC (290-290-283-863) took third at 11 over. Tournament host San Diego (289-293-284-866) rounded out the top five at 14 over.
The Cougars next compete at the William H. Tucker Invitational at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sept. 25-26.
