THE COUGARS. BYU women’s soccer (4-2-2, 0-0-1 Big 12) tied Arizona 1-1 in its first Big 12 match of the season last week. Although the Cougars outshot the Wildcats and controlled much of the game, Arizona scored in the final four minutes to earn the draw. Mia Goettsche scored BYU’s lone goal of the match, her first of the season. She also had a season-high five shots on the night. After the tie, BYU fell out of the top-25, but was still receiving votes in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll.
THE KNIGHTS. UCF (5-1-1, 0-0-1 Big 12) also opened conference play with a draw, playing Texas Tech to a 2-2 tie last week. Since the Red Raiders were ranked when they played, the Knights moved up two spots in the poll and took BYU’s previous No. 23 national ranking. In that match, the Knights came from behind twice, with equalizers from Naomi Clark and Katsi Bengoa. The Red Raiders outshot the Knights 19-4, but UCF’s keeper tallied six saves on the night to help her team earn the draw.
COUGARS VS. KNIGHTS. BYU and UCF have played three times, with BYU leading the series 2-1. The Cougars beat UCF twice in 2023, once on South Field and once in the semi-finals for the Big 12 soccer tournament. BYU's only loss to the Knights was a 2-1 road loss last season. Despite the loss, BYU outshot UCF 20-5, with eight shots on frame in last year’s matchup.
