Akina sixth, BYU fourth as weather suspends play at William H. Tucker Invitational

The Cougars sit tied for fourth at 11-under par at the UNM Championship Course.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — No. 24 BYU men’s golf sits tied for fourth place at 11-under par after inclement weather suspended play Friday at the William H. Tucker Invitational at the UNM Championship Course.

Kihei Akina leads the Cougars, sitting tied for sixth at 6-under. Senior Peter Kim is tied for 14th at 4-under and is the only other BYU golfer in the Top 25.

“We drove the ball well enough to be leading the tournament, but we aren’t capitalizing from the fairway,” head coach Todd Miller said. “As a team, I am really happy with the way the guys are managing tough holes and avoiding big mistakes. We will need our best round of the tournament tomorrow if we are going to pass the teams ahead of us.”

Akina shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round, starting play on the fifth hole. He offset a bogey on the eighth hole with a birdie on the ninth. The sophomore added birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 before making an eagle on the first. He capped the round with a birdie on the third hole to finish at 5-under.

Akina is 1-under in the second round with five holes to play. He started the round on the fifth hole, making birdies on Nos. 6 and 12 and a bogey on No. 13.

Kim opened the day with three birdies and a double bogey in the first round, carding a 1-under 71. In the second round, the Salt Lake City native recorded a bogey on the 11th hole and an eagle on the 18th to sit at 3-under with seven holes remaining.

Drake Harvey is tied for 26th at 1-under with five holes to play. He shot a 3-under 69 in the opening round, making four birdies after a bogey on his first hole.

Angus Klintworth, with six holes to play, and Parker Bunn, with five holes remaining, are tied for 58th at 3-over.

Competing as an individual, Austin Shelley is tied for 43rd at 1-over with five holes to play.

San Diego State leads the tournament at 14-under, while Santa Clara and No. 15 New Mexico are tied for second at 12-under. Colorado, also at 11-under, shares fourth place with the Cougars.

The second round will resume Saturday at 7:30 a.m. MDT, followed by the final round. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.com.
