PROVO, Utah — After a bye with no game this past week, BYU football maintained its No. 9 ranking in the US LBM Coaches Poll administered by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) while dropping one spot to No. 10 in The Associated Press Top 25 released on Sunday.
Poll voters gave Florida (4-0) the biggest jump in the rankings this week, moving the undefeated Gators into the top 10 at No. 8 following their 52-28 triumph over previous No.4/6 Ole Miss. AP voters advanced Florida 13 places, while the coaches gave the Gators a 14-spot jump. Meanwhile, Ole Miss fell out of the top 10 in the AFCA poll to No. 12, a six spot drop, but were rated by AP as the No. 9 team overall, a five-place descent, which pushed the idle Cougars back one ranking to No. 10.
Top 10
The three top-rated teams stayed unchanged in both major polls, with No. 1 Texas (4-0), followed by No. 2 Georgia (4-0) and No. 3 Notre Dame (4-0)—BYU's Oct. 17 opponent in LaVell Edwards Stadium. Miami (4-0) is up to No. 4 in both polls this week, followed by Ohio State (3-1) being favored at No. 5 by AP while the AFCA provides preference at No. 5 to reigning national champion Indiana (4-0).
After those two Big Ten teams are flip-flopped at No. 6, the SEC's Alabama (4-0) and Florida (4-0) were the agreed upon No. 7 and No. 8 teams. No. 9 BYU (3-0) and No. 10 Texas Tech (4-0) of the Big 12 were unchanged by the AFCA, while the AP put Ole Miss at No. 9 ahead of BYU at No. 10. LSU (3-1) of the SEC is No. 11 in both polls.
Big 12
The Big 12 has five teams in The AP Top 25 this week, with Oklahoma State (3-1) entering the rankings at No. 19 to join No. 10 BYU, No. 12 Texas Tech, No. 13 Utah (4-0) and No. 20 Houston (3-1). The coaches kept Oklahoma State just outside their rankings, listed 26th overall among teams receiving votes, and slotting Utah and Houston at No. 13 and No. 20, respectively, after keeping BYU and Texas Tech in the top 10. Other Big 12 teams Cincinnati (4-0), Arizona (3-1) and West Virginia (3-1) each received votes.
BYU in the Polls
Coming off a 12-2 season and Pop-Tarts Bowl title, BYU entered the season in the 2026 preseason polls ranked 15th by the coaches and tied for No. 14 with USC by AP voters, which marked the second-highest preseason AP ranking for BYU in program history (No. 10 in 1985). After dropping back to No. 15 in the AP rankings following its 63-7 season-opening win over Utah Tech, BYU returned to the same slot in the AP poll where it finished last season at No. 11 following its 28-17 conference win over Arizona while the coaches rated BYU at No. 13. Last week BYU moved up to No. 9 in both polls following its 41-23 road win at Colorado State of the Pac-12.
Historically, BYU has been ranked 309 times overall in the AP poll since the program's first national ranking in 1974. The Cougars have been ranked in each of the last 18 AP polls released since entering last year's AP rankings at No. 25 with a 3-0 record.
