SAN DIEGO, Calif. — BYU women’s tennis opened its 2026 fall season at the USTA SoCal Championships this weekend, which was highlighted by Chelsea Bluestein advancing to the singles semifinals and Sue Yan Tan and Cara Korhonen reaching the doubles quarterfinals.
Singles Action
The Cougars opened singles play Thursday with four victories. Sephi Sheng defeated Emilija Pranyte of San Jose State, 6-3, 6-1, while Yuyun Chen defeated Alexia Clara Adascalitei of Grand Canyon, 6-2, 6-1. Chelsea Bluestein also had a comeback victory over Vesa Gjinaj of San Diego State, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, while Sue Yan Tan defeated Aniela Odrobina of Grand Canyon, 6-1, 6-4.
Bluestein continued her run Friday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sein Myoung of Stanford in the Round of 32. She then defeated Maria Shmakova of San Diego, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6, in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tan also advanced to the quarterfinals Friday, defeating Anna Linn Moll of San Diego, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, before earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stella Beldiman of Boise State.
In the quarterfinals Saturday, Bluestein defeated her teammate Tan in a three-set battle, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. Bluestein's run continued in the semifinals, where she fell to Lily Taylor of Arizona State, 6-3, 6-2.
The Cougars also picked up several victories in extra singles matches throughout the tournament. Sage Bergeson defeated Claudia Sofia Martinez Solis of Grand Canyon, 6-4, 6-2, while Cara Korhonen earned two victories, defeating Avery Olsen of Utah, 6-1, 6-0, and Adascalitei, 6-0, 6-2. Bella Lewis defeated Stela Dzimovic of UNLV, 6-3, 6-3, and Allegra van der Walt defeated Mia Woo of Nevada, 6-0, 6-2.
Doubles Action
Tan and Korhonen led the Cougars in doubles play, opening the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Defne Aydemir and Mia Woo of Nevada. The pair continued their run Friday with a 6-2 victory over Kaho Oyama and Sofiia Sokolvak of UNLV to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tan and Korhonen faced Kaia Giribalan and Sein Myoung of Seattle in the quarterfinals Saturday, falling 7-5.
The Cougars also picked up two victories in extra doubles matches. Bergeson and Sheng defeated Stela Dzimovic and Eszter Kis Czako of UNLV, 6-4, while Bluestein and Chen earned a 6-0 victory over Sonya Goldberg and Emma Pell of UC San Diego.
