PROVO, Utah — No. 14 BYU women’s soccer drew with Oklahoma, 1-1, to remain unbeaten at South Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophie Sivulich’s goal in the 84th minute equalized the match after the Cougars entered halftime trailing 1-0.
“I thought we played some really good soccer today,” head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “We were able to move the ball. Obviously, we have just struggled to score. We’ve had 50 corner kicks and a lot of good opportunities that we’ve created. We just have to figure out a way to put the ball in the back of the net when we have those chances.”
The Cougars moved to 4-1-1 on the season, while Oklahoma moved to 6-0-2.
First Half
The game opened with back-and-forth play before midfielder Afton Perry took BYU’s first shot in the seventh minute. Following a deflection, the Cougars were unable to capitalize on the ensuing corner kick.
BYU added back-to-back shots from Mika Krommehoek and Emma Neff in the 11th minute, but a deflection and a subsequent save kept the match scoreless.
Oklahoma recorded its first shot in the 12th minute, but senior goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson deflected the attempt. Oklahoma’s Kayla Keefer tapped in the rebound but was called offside.
BYU received a yellow card in the 16th minute, followed by two yellow cards for Oklahoma in the 19th minute.
Oklahoma recorded three consecutive shots in the 22nd, 23rd and 24th minutes. One went wide left, while Peterson saved the other two, including a diving save in the 24th minute.
After a hydration break, Oklahoma added another shot before BYU recorded attempts in the 33rd and 38th minutes.
Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute when Fernanda Dantas headed the ball into the back of the net.
BYU and Oklahoma entered the break tied in shots, 6-6, with Oklahoma holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. This was the first time this season that the Cougars trailed at halftime.
Second Half
BYU came out aggressively to begin the second half, recording a shot in the 47th minute and maintaining possession for several minutes.
After a BYU shot in the 66th minute was blocked, Oklahoma quickly moved the ball down the field on the counterattack, leading to a near miss wide left by Keefer.
Oklahoma and BYU traded shots in the 69th and 70th minutes, followed by another Oklahoma attempt that sailed over the crossbar in the 74th minute.
Oklahoma received another yellow card in the 74th minute.
After her initial shot was deflected by an Oklahoma defender, Sivulich equalized in the 84th minute with a shot into the upper-left corner of the goal.
The Cougars added two more shots in the 86th and 90th minutes. Oklahoma received its third yellow card in the 87th minute before the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
