IRVING, Texas — BYU returner Cannon DeVries was today named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, while wide receiver Legend Glasker was honored as the conference Freshman of the Week.
DeVries and Glasker combined to score four of BYU's nine touchdowns in a 63-7 season opening win over Utah Tech on Saturday.
GLASKER, a 6-1, 175-pound true freshman from Lehi, Utah, led all Cougar receivers with three catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, he had two carries for 16 yards and a third touchdown, accounting for 18 total points in his first collegiate game.
The three touchdowns, marks the first time a BYU receiver has posted a three-score game since Puka Nacua against Arkansas in 2022. The last Cougar true freshman with three or more touchdowns in a game was Jamaal Williams, who had four at Georgia Tech on Oct. 27, 2012.
DEVRIES, a 6-0, 185-pound sophomore returner/defensive back from North Ogden, Utah, took the opening kickoff of the second half three-yards deep in the end zone and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown.
The 100-yard scamper is BYU's first kickoff returned for a touchdown since Talan Alfrey scooped up an onside kick and returned it 58-yards to the house against Houston in 2024. The Cougars' last 100-yard kickoff return also came in 2024, when Keelan Marion took the opening kickoff of the second half the distance at Wyoming.
DeVries also returned two punts in the second quarter against Utah Tech for a total of 73 yards, setting up a touchdown and a field goal attempt.
BYU opens Big 12 play against Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 12 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on FOX with the kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MDT.
