PROVO, Utah — BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier received several honors today for his performance in the Cougars’ win over Iowa State on Saturday.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound sophomore from Murrieta, California, was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, was a Davey O’Brien Great 8 selection and a Manning Award Stars of the Week honoree.

Bachmeier completed 22 of 30 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 8 BYU to a 24-10 win over the Cyclones. He also had 109 rushing yards on nine attempts to become the first Cougar quarterback to record 300-plus passing yards and 100-plus rushing yards in the same game, since Taysom Hill accomplished the feat in October 2013 at Houston.

With his performance on Saturday, Bachmeier became one of just four Big 12 quarterbacks all time to pass for 325-plus yards, rush for 100-plus yards while not be sacked, joining Jalen Hurts (2019), Kyler Murray (2018) and Sam Ehlinger (2017).

Bachmeier previously captured all three awards earlier this season following his performance in leading BYU to a 28-17 win over Arizona. Through five games in 2026, he has completed 77 of 116 passes for 1,033 yards and eight touchdowns. Bachmeier is also BYU’s second-leading rusher with 36 attempts for 239 yards and four additional touchdowns.

In 2025, Bachmeier was named a semifinalist for both the Davey O'Brien Award and the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year. He was also a candidate for the Manning Award.

As a true freshman, he completed 251 of 387 passes for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2025. He averaged 216.6 yards per game passing and was second on the team in rushing, with 147 carries for 527 yards and 11 scores.

Bachmeier was honored as conference freshman of the week seven times in 12 weeks during the 2025 regular season, on his way to earning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Award and being named Big 12 Honorable Mention. As an offensive co-captain, Bachmeier helped lead No. 12 BYU to an 11-2 record in 2025, a trip to the Big 12 Championship and an invitation of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

The Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award honors student-athletes who exemplify O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.

The Manning Award is presented annually to the collegiate quarterback as judged by the Sugar Bowl Committee to be the best in the United States. It is the only quarterback award that includes each candidate's postseason-bowl performance in its balloting.
