NEW YORK — BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier was today named Associate Press National Player of the Week for his performance in the Cougars’ 28-24 win over then-No. 2 ranked Notre Dame on Saturday.

Bachmeier completed 23 of 36 pass for 224 yards and a touchdown in the Cougars’ win. He also ran for 45 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while catching a pass for a fourth score. He is the first BYU quarterback to record a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game since consensus All-American quarterback Steve Young accomplished the feat against Missouri in the 1983 Holiday Bowl.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound sophomore from Murrieta, California, helped BYU roll up 360 yards of offense on the No. 1 defensive team in the nation who was holding opponents to an average of just 214 yards per game.

Earlier today, Bachmeier was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and was a Davey O’Brien Great 8 selection. After more than 9,000 votes, AP readers also selected Bachmeier as the national fan player of the week.

Through six games, Bachmeier has completed 100 of 152 passes for 1,257 yards and nine touchdowns. He is also BYU’s second-leading rusher with 49 attempts for 284 yards and six additional touchdowns.

In 2025, Bachmeier was named a semifinalist for both the Davey O'Brien Award and the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year. He was also a candidate for the Manning Award.
As a true freshman, he completed 251 of 387 passes for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2025. He averaged 216.6 yards per game passing and was second on the team in rushing, with 147 carries for 527 yards and 11 scores.

Bachmeier was honored as conference freshman of the week seven times in 12 weeks during the 2025 regular season, on his way to earning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Award and being named Big 12 Honorable Mention. As an offensive co-captain, Bachmeier helped lead No. 12 BYU to an 11-2 record in 2025, a trip to the Big 12 Championship and an invitation of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

No. 2 BYU travels to Orlando to take on UCF on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. MT) at the Acrisure Bounce House. The game will be broadcast on FOX with live radio coverage on BYU Radio.
