IRVING, Texas – Cougar swimmers Peter Etzold, Lance Cruz and Emilie Griffin each earned Big 12 weekly honors, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.

Etzold, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, was named men’s Big 12 Swimmer of the Week after sweeping all three of his events at BYU’s head to head matchup with UC Santa Barbara. Etzold helped the 200 medley relay win with a 1:26.79 and then went on to finish first in the 100 breaststroke in 52.74 before winning the 200 breaststroke with a 1:57.35 finish. The junior notably won both individual events by nearly two seconds. Etzold claimed the second Big 12 weekly honors of his career after earning the men’s newcomer of the week award during his freshman season in 2024-2025.

Lance Cruz, a transfer from Niagara University, claimed men’s Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors after taking fourth in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke behind Etzold.

Emilie Griffin was named women’s Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, helping BYU sweep the newcomer awards, by taking first overall in the 200 breaststroke finishing in 2:16.98, second in the 200 freestyle. The freshman, in her second ever collegiate performance, also helped the 200 medley relay team take fourth and the 200 freestyle relay team finish fifth.

This is the first time this season the Cougars have claimed weekly Big 12 honors.
