CARMEL, Calif. — No. 25 BYU men’s golf leads The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate at 24 under par after darkness suspended second-round play Monday at Santa Lucia Preserve.

Peter Kim is in second at 9 under to lead the Cougars, while Drake Harvey is tied for third at 7 under. David Liechty is tied for ninth at 5 under, rounding out BYU’s three top-10 golfers competing in the team lineup.

“I was really impressed by the team today,” head coach Todd Miller said. “We have six of the seven guys competing under par in the tournament. Every time I saw someone make a mistake, they came back with a birdie on the next hole. We are also leading the field in par-4 and par-5 scoring.”

Kim shot a 7-under 65 in the opening round, recording seven birdies and no bogeys. He made birdies on Nos. 4 and 8 to make the turn at 2 under before carding three consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-14. He added a pair of birdies on the final two holes to finish at 7 under.

In the second round, Kim bogeyed the fifth hole before making three consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-8. He made the turn at 1 under after a bogey on No. 9, then birdied No. 13 to finish with a 2-under 70.

Harvey opened the day with a 2-under 70, recording four birdies and two bogeys. He tied his career-best 18-hole score after carding a 5-under 67 in the second round, including a stretch of three consecutive birdies on Nos. 11-13.

Liechty shot rounds of 71 and 68 to finish the day at 5 under. His opening round featured an eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, while his 4-under 68 tied the lowest 18-hole score of his career.

Cooper Jones is tied for 20th at 2 under with rounds of 73 and 69, while Jackson Mauss is tied for 54th at 3 over after shooting rounds of 72 and 75.

Competing as an individual, Austin Shelley opened with a 4-under 68, recording seven birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. He is tied for ninth at 5 under with four holes remaining in the second round.

Also competing as an individual, Angus Klintworth carded a 2-under 70 in the opening round and is tied for 27th at 1 under with eight holes remaining in the second round.

The Cougars hold a five-stroke lead over Saint Mary’s, which sits in second at 19 under. Oregon is in third at 17 under, followed by Grand Canyon in fourth at 15 under. No. 21 Ohio State rounds out the top five at 14 under.

“We need to keep the pedal down tomorrow,” Miller said. “All the teams behind us have the ability to go low.”

The second round will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m. MDT, followed by the final round. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.com.
