The Cougars and Utes then traded service errors before Little Chambers struck again with a kill, moving to the middle of the court and twisting her body to hit around Utah's triple block. The Utes responded with a 3-0 run, fueled in part by an overturned challenge, to pull within two at 11-9.

The teams traded points down the stretch, bringing the score to 18-14. Utah then put together a 3-0 run, highlighted by two kills and a block, to pull within one and force a BYU timeout with the Cougars leading 18-17.

Another BYU ace, Utah's 10th service error, a Little Chambers overpass kill and a block from Little Chambers and Burgess extended the Cougar advantage to 20-13, forcing another Utah timeout.
