LAS -- An error with the bases loaded led to a 9-8 baseball victory by UNLV over BYU on Friday in 11 innings.
The Cougars lost a 5-2 lead and battled back to tie the game at six and eight-all, briefly taking leads of 7-6 and 8-6 in the ninth and 10th innings.
Cougar starting pitcher Chris Capper struck out seven in as many innings before loading the bases in the eighth with no outs with a 5-2 lead. The Rebels scored all of those runners to tie the game and took a 6-5 lead before the inning ended.
In the top of the ninth Brandon Relf led off with a triple to the right center field wall. The relay throw to third hit Relf in the helmet and he scored on the error to tie the game at six-all. Relf came up with a big 1-6-3 inning-ending groundout in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Ryan Bernal led off with the first of three consecutive singles and scored on the last of those by Austin Hall to give BYU a 7-6 lead. Jonathan Cluff scored the eighth run when Relf hit a two-out single.
BYU jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The first of those runs came off Bryce Ayoso’s two-out double which scored Alex Wolfe, who had walked in the first inning. Sean McNaughton drew a lead-off walk in the second and scored off Austin Hall’s one-out triple to right field. Hall scored on the next play, a sac-fly by Dane Nielsen.
The Cougars regained the two runs they gave up in the third by adding a pair of runs in the fourth. Nielsen doubled in that first run in the fourth to score Cluff, who led off with a walk. Relf walked on the next play and was doubled in by Stephen Wells as the Rebels had replaced Matt Hutchison with Brian Gilbertson.
BYU, now 19-25 overall and 6-11 in league play, looks to even the series at three-all in Saturday afternoon’s finale at Las Vegas.
