LAS -- Jonathan Cluff highlighted bookend BYU victories for the week as his grand slam Saturday helped down UNLV, 16-7 in windy conditions.
Cluff, who began the week with a 4-for-4, two-home run performance at Utah Valley, continued with his hot bat at UNLV. In the finale of a three-game series with the Rebels his second-inning grand slam put BYU up 12-1.
Cluff’s slam was one of four homers for BYU. Sean McNaughton hit a pair of homers, including a two-run shot in the second and a solo in the eighth inning. Alex Wolfe, hit a three-run blast in the second as well.
McNaughton, Wolfe and Ryan Bernal are all now tied with 11 homers each this season.
“I’m pleased that we came out and swung the bats well in the first part of the game.,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We answered back when UNLV scored and were able to put it away.
“If the wind is blowing out it becomes a very small park here in a hurry. We had a much better approach at the plate compared to earlier games and the balls we hit out were off solid, line-drive swings. “
The Cougars, now 20-25 overall and 7-11 in the Mountain West Conference, even their record with UNLV at 3-3, but ended on the plus side with a 55-54 run differential should that come into tie-breaking or seeding in the league tournament.
BYU continues its current road trip, busing to No. 2 Arizona State for a two-game series on Monday and Tuesday.
“They (Arizona State) are tough and have good pitching. They have an aura about them, but hopefully our guys will get fired up to play one of the top teams in the country.”
