TEMPE -- No. 2 Arizona State shut out BYU’s baseball team, 14-0, on Monday night.
The Cougars, now 20-26 overall, managed only three hits against the Sun Devil’s top pitchers that struck out 15 BYU batters.
Jonathan Cluff hit a two-out double to centerfield in the second inning, advancing Ryan Bernal to third. With that double, Cluff maintained a six-game hitting streak.
Dane Nielsen led off with a single in the sixth, and Bernal got a two-out single up the middle in the seventh.
It was the second shutout registered this season against BYU, dating back to a 3-0 victory at the beginning of the year at UC Davis. This was the largest shutout margin ASU recorded against BYU since at 11-0 victory in 1973.
The two teams play again on Tuesday night.
