"Our guys were good tonight," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "They deserved to win. They played hard, they competed hard. The second half we were just really, really together as a group. The one thing we're really pleased with is we've found a group of guys that has been able to compete consistently for a good little stretch here and it's paying off."

Haws finished with a game-high 21 points to give him 2,614 for his career. He needed seven going into the game to eclipse Fredette, who scored 2,599 during his Cougar career.

"To break a record like that it's a pretty special thing," Haws said. "I owe all the credit to my coaches and my teammates. I just love being at BYU and it's a really cool feeling right now."

In addition to Haws' 21 points, Skyler Halford added a season-high 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Kyle Collinsworth finished with a double-double, 15 points and 11 assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Chase Fischer and Ryan Andrus contributed eight points each with Corbin Kaufusi adding six points, five rebounds and a block. Anson Winder recorded a season-high five steals on the night.

Kaufusi scored the first Cougar points of the game at the 18:38 mark with Haws scoring the next six BYU points to tie the game at eight apiece and to tie Fredette on BYU’s all-time scoring list. With 14:38 left in the half, Haws’ drive to the rim put him first on the scoring list with 2,601 points. Halford gave BYU its first lead of the game after connecting on a triple at the 10:45 mark.

After a 6-0 BYU run and a 24-23 BYU lead, Portland responded with a 6-0 run of its own to retake a five-point lead with under six minutes left in the half. Ten points from Collinsworth and Winder pulled BYU back ahead at 33-32, but the Pilots ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 41-33 lead.

Haws led the team with nine points with Collinsworth following with eight points at halftime. Portland shot 53.6 percent from the field, while the Cougars shot 34.3 percent.

The Cougars opened the second half with an 11-2 run over 3:19, ignited by Fischer’s shot from deep and capped with Frank Bartley IV’s backdoor pass to Haws to take a 44-43 lead. Following one Portland basket, BYU reeled off a 15-4 run that included three triples from Halford to extend the lead to 59-50 with 10:01 remaining.

A 7-0 run by the Pilots brought them back within two, but was answered by Halford’s three-point play to put BYU back up by five at 67-62 with 5:25 left in the game. With 3:32 left in the game, the Cougars started a big 13-0 run over two minutes that included six points from Haws as BYU ran away for the 82-69 win.

The Cougars scored 23 points off Portland's 19 turnovers, outscored its bench 32-6 and held it to 25 points in the second half to BYU's 49.
