Day 1 Recap

ALBURQUERQUE, N.M. – BYU golfer Joe Parkinson and the Cougars finished in fifth place at William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Saturday.

“We finished fifth in a very strong field,” BYU men’s golf head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “It was a respectable finish, but we were hoping to be a little better. You never want to move backwards in the standings, but there were some really good teams out there.”

In the 17-team tournament, New Mexico and Arizona State remained on top at one-under-par and 17-over-par, respectively. Southern California (+23) and UNLV (+24) jumped ahead of BYU, who finished 30-over-par after the final round.

Parkinson tied for fourth place and hit a score of 69 in the third round, which was the second best score out of 104 players in the tournament. He ended the tournament at one-over-par with four birdies to complete the final round.

Joe Parkinson played awesome today,” Brockbank said. “He got the second-highest score in the third round and helped the team.”

Senior Jordan Hammer tied for 20th place at eight-over-par, while Justin Keiley tied for 35th at 13-over-par. Jordan Rodgers and Stephen Archibald finished the tournament tied at 40th and 61st place, respectively.

Individual player Cole Ogden tied for 77th place finishing the round at 21-over-par.

The Cougars return to action on Oct. 14-15 for the MacKenzie Invitational in Sonoma, Calif. Live stats from the Sonoma Golf Club can be followed at golfstats.com
