BYU swim alumnus Budd Shields has been named to the CSCAA100 List of Greatest Men's Swimmers and Divers, which names 100 of the greatest swim and dive athletes over the past 100 years.
The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America is the nation’s first organization of college coaches, and its list of 100 Greatest Swimmers and Divers was compiled as part of its 100th year celebration.
Shields was a two-time All-American at BYU in 1928 and again in 1929. He won two NCAA titles in 1928, while breaking the NCAA and National records in the 440 freestyle and NCAA record in the 220 freestyle. He repeated the feat the following year, setting new NCAA records and winning both events at the 1929 NCAA Championship. Shields amassed the most individual points in the 1928 and 1929 NCAA meets, earning him Outstanding Swimmer honors both years. He was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1971 and with the inaugural class into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975.
Shields was selected among the 86 swimmers and 14 divers chosen out of over 3,000 nominations. A panel of current and former athletes, coaches and media members made their selections from 973 finalists. Of the swimmers and divers chosen, selections include 12 members of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and 59 Olympians, with athletes hailing from 28 states and 13 countries.
