PROVO, Utah – Freshman opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, the association announced Tuesday.

Fernandez helped propel BYU men’s volleyball to a pair of true road wins last week at No. 14 Ball State and No. 1 Ohio State.

Against the Cardinals, he collected his first-ever double-double of 13 kills on a career-high .458 clip to go with a career- and match-high 11 digs. Fernandez also served up a career-high three aces – most on either team – and the second-most blocks of the night with four.

Then, in the upset of the top-ranked Buckeyes, he put up a team-best 19 kills to go with six blocks – tied for most in the match. Fernandez also added five digs and two aces in the win.

On the week, Fernandez totaled 32 kills on a .349 clip, 16 digs, 10 blocks and five aces.

This is his first-ever AVCA weekly award and first for BYU this season. On Monday, Fernandez was named the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week. Last week, he was named the Off the Block National Freshman of the Week.
