PROVO -- In front of a record-breaking crowd of 6,206, the BYU women's basketball team fell to Utah, 80-49, Saturday night in a tough home loss.
The 31-point deficit marks the first time since 1996 that Utah defeated the Cougars by at least 30 points. Utah now leads the series 33-57 overall. The loss comes as the first women's basketball face-off in the Deseret First Duel. The Cougars are now 8-7 on the season, and 2-1 in conference; while Utah is 14-3 and 3-0 in conference.
Senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling led the Cougars with 21 points and a season-high five three pointers. It was her 11th time to scoring in the double figures this season.
"We have got to give Utah a lot of credit because they played outstanding," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "They outplayed us in every single aspect of the game, and we didn't execute our game plan like we wanted to."
Utah jumped ahead from the onset of the game. The Utes held the Cougars scoreless for the first nine minutes of the half, leading 22-0.
BYU got on the board with a three pointer from freshman Coriann Wood and managed 20 points before the ending the half, which ended with a score of 46-20.
The Cougars came out stronger in the second half scoring 29 points, but a 24-point performance from the Utes's Leilani Mitchell and their large first-half lead secured the Utah win.
"Mitchell created a lot of opportunities against us," Judkins said. "She is a very smart player and had one of the best games of her career."
The Cougars travel to conference-foe San Diego State for their next game, on Jan. 23.
