PROVO, Utah – BYU gymnastics head coach Guard Young has announced Shannon Evans and Natasha Marsh as the team captains for the 2018-19 season.

"They are different types of leaders," Young said. "Shannon is a vocal leader; she jumps in and helps coach. Natasha is this quiet leader that really leads by example. They are very different, but they complement each other very well, which is unique."

Evans was a Second Team All-American in 2018 after placing seventh on bars at the NCAA National Championships with a 9.900 score. Evans was the first All-American in 14 years at BYU.

She was also named MRGC all-around champion after earning 39.400 at the conference championships. She has been MRGC Specialist of the Week eight times, including four times for her performance on bars. In 2018, Evans also recorded career-high scores on bars (9.950), floor (9.950) and all-around (39.425).

"We want to prove that we should be at nationals and that it wasn't an accident," Evans said. "We want to be better by leaps and bounds—not just by inches towards our goal, but by sprinting after it."

Marsh recorded career-high scores on bars (9.875) and beam (9.900) in 2018. The senior earned a 9.800 or higher on beam in eight-consecutive meets.

Marsh was named MRGC Specialist of the Week twice in 2018, once for her bars routine against Air Force and another on the beam against Utah State.

"My goal is to be better than we were last year," Marsh said. "I think there is a lot of space for improvement and that anything is possible."
