Cougars shine in SEC country with win at Missouri
COLUMBIA, Missouri — A dominating attack and two goals by MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Mikayla Colohan gave BYU women's soccer a convincing 3-0 win at Missouri on Wednesday.
"It was a great win for us tonight against a really good team on the road," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I thought we were sharp tonight. I like how we came out in the second half and put the match away early."
BYU showed dominance early by keeping the ball in Mizzou territory and Bella Folino scored the first goal of the match in the 19th minute off an assist from Makaylie Moore Call. The Cougars outshot the Tigers in the first half 14-4 to lead 1-0 at the break.
Mizzou brought more energy in the second half with 10 shots, but BYU’s defense continued to deliver opportunities for its offense by creating turnovers and setting up movement.
Following a foul on Colohan in the 50th minute, the Cougar midfielder quickly recovered with her second goal of the year just a minute later on an assist from Folino to give BYU a 2-0 lead. In the 53rd minute, forward Cameron Tucker sent up a shot that was deflected by Missouri goalie McKenna Sheehan but Colohan delivered it into the net from the top of the 18-yard box for the Cougars final score of the night.
“The game was very physical and I thought we matched their intensity,” said Colohan. “We have several players in new roles this year and I believe our attack is really starting to come together.”
The victory marks Jennifer Rockwood’s 399th win as head coach at BYU. With one more win, she will become just the 12th head coach in NCAA soccer history to achieve 400 wins and only the fifth to do so at the same school.
BYU travels to Loyola Marymount for WCC play on Saturday, March 6 at 1:00 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcast live on the BYU Sports Network.
- Colohan lead BYU with two goals, both in the second half
- BYU applied pressure with 29 total shots, maintaining offensive control for the majority of the game
- Both teams had 16 fouls, which interrupted momentum throughout the match
- The Cougars had 8 corner kicks compared to 4 for Missou
