PROVO, Utah – Despite outshooting the Razorbacks 19-9, the Cougars ended the night in a 3-3 draw on South Field.
Five of the six goals in tonight's match were scored in the first 45 minutes of play. Brecken Mozingo now leads the Cougars in goals with four, and has scored in three consecutive matches. Of BYU's 19 shots, seven were on frame and three found the back of the net.
First Half
The Cougars had the first shot of the match as Bella Folino just missed wide right, but the Razorbacks countered quickly with a shot of their own through the first five minutes of play.
Arkansas struck first as forward Jessica De Filippo found the back of the net in the 12th minute, giving the Razorbacks a 1-0 lead.
Forward Brecken Mozingo tied things up quickly for BYU with a strike from the top of the box, tying the match at 1-1. Mozingo’s goal made it her third-straight match with a goal.
Arkansas bounced right back with a goal by midfielder Ellie Podojil in the 18th minute, giving the Razorbacks a 2-1 lead.
With a burst of momentum, Bella Folino quickly tied the match back up for the Cougars with a goal in the 21st minute, evening things up at 2-2.
Mozingo ripped one from the top corner of the box attempting to give BYU its first lead of the match in the 22nd minute, but her shot hit the top of the net and she was denied, as the score remained tied.
The pressure was on by the Cougars' offensive attack throughout the first half. BYU was able to take its first lead of the match with a goal by freshman Sierra Pennock in the 35th minute. Pennock also scored against CSUN last Sunday, and has tallied back-to-back games with a goal. With the score now at 3-2 going into halftime, the Cougars maintained possession of the ball.
BYU’s three goals in the first half marked the most they’ve scored in a half all season. The five goals between the two squads were the most goals scored at South Field through one half of play this year.
Second Half
Midfielder Jamie Shepherd had a chance in the 57th minute to put the Cougars up two goals, but her shot missed barely wide right.
BYU continued to apply pressure early in the second half and led in the shot department 15-6 through 60 minutes of play.
The first card was issued in the second half as a yellow card was given to Arkansas midfielder Bea Franklin in the 66th minute. The Razorbacks led in the foul department 8-5.
Despite the offensive pressure by the Cougars, Podojil's second goal of the match equalized the game in the 83rd minute.
Although the Cougars outshot Arkansas 19-9, the Razorbacks were able to hang on and force a tie (3-3) under the lights at South Field.
