PULLMAN -- Despite 12 shots on goal and a hard fought 90 minutes of play, the No. 18 BYU women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Washington State Cougars, Thursday.

A quick goal in the ninth minute of the game from freshman Carlee Payne put the Cougars on the scoreboard early. BYU took eight shots in the first half, with senior Alyssa Vander Veur leading the way with four of them. The Cougars also took a total of four corners in the match.

Just two minutes before the half, Washington State would tie up the score at 1-1 on a goal from Kiersten Dallstream. The homestanding Cougars ended the half with eight shots.

A goal from Carly Dobratz with 23 minutes to play would put Washington State on top 2-1. They had a total of 19 shots in the game.

The visiting Cougar defense once again played a strong 90 minutes. BYU sophomore goalie McKinzie Olson has had a total of 12 saves in the 2009 season, five of them coming in this game against Washington State. Last year, Cougar opponents only took 48 shots against BYU.

The Cougars, now 3-2-1, play next in Montana at noon on Saturday.
