Huang, Astle, Lin come home champions of CSUN Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- BYU women’s tennis closed out fall semester play at the CSUN Fall Invitational with freshman Bobo Huang finishing atop the singles A draw as junior Emilee Astle and sophomore Kara Lin won the doubles B draw over the weekend.

Friday:

BYU competed in the A and B draws in the doubles portion of the invitational. Senior Leah Heimuli and freshman Madison Smith, and senior Anastasia Abramyan and Huang made up the teams competing in the A draw, with Astle and Lin competing in the B draw.

Abramyan and Huang competed against Dalia Ahmed and Carlotta Nonnis Marzano of Fresno State in the first round of play, falling short 7-5. Heimuli and Smith played Cecilia Rosas and Julia Marko of Youngstown State, falling 6-1 in their first match. Abramyan and Huang went on to win their second match of the day, defeating Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Carolina Millan of USU 6-3, putting them up against Heimuli and Smith, who moved forward due to a default by Iva Zelic and Neli Sunjic of Portland, in the final round.

Astle and Lin competed against Maddy Ferreros and Warisara Lee of Sacramento State in their first match of the day, winning 7-5. They continued their march to the finals, defeating Myu Kageyama and Satoho Toriumi of UNM 6-1, placing them in the B draw finals.

BYU competed in the A, B and C draw of the singles matches in the invitational. Huang, Abrayman and Heimuli competed in the A draw with Smith, Lin and Astle in the B draw and sophomore Xenia de Luna in the C draw. 

Huang competed against Ana Fraile Toboso of CSUN in her first match, defeating her 6-3, 6-2 to move on towards the finals. Abramyan took on Jessica Tsukiji of UCI falling 6-2, 6-2 in her first match. Heimuli lost a hard-fought battle to Cristina Flaquer of FSU 7-6(9), 6-3.

Smith took on Warisara of SAC, winning 6-2, 6-0 in her first match. Lin competed in a well-fought match, defeating Juliette Daries of CSUF 6-3, 6-4. Astle also moved on toward the finals with a default win over Ella Husrefovic of Fresno State. De Luna finished her first match of the day defeating Lili Minich of YSU 6-3, 6-1.

Saturday:

Astle and Lin competed in the doubles finals, defeating Jessica Stanmore and Minich of YSU 6-2 to become the B draw doubles champions. Heimuli and Smith did not play their final match against Abramyan and Huang for the consolation championship.

Moving back to the singles divisions, Huang continued her run to the champions match defeating Marko 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in the second round. Huang took on Millan in the semi-finals winning a hard-fought match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the finals of the A draw. Huang's final match against Gonzalez Rico of UCI was not played.

Heimuli moved on from her loss Friday, defeating Rosas 6-2, 6-2, before falling in her second match of the day 6-4, 6-4 to Magdelena Hedrzak in the consolation bracket. Abramyan lost her first match of the day to Sally Pethybridge of UP 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, after which she defeated Fraile Toboso 6-3, 6-2.

Astle competed against Victoria Santibanez Luna of CSUN in the second round of the B draw, winning 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, moving forward. Lin defeated Aleksandra Dimitrijevic of UP 6-4, 6-0 moving forward to the semi-final. Lin and Astle did not compete against one another in the semi-final. Smith took on Marzano of FSU, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Smith moved on to play Alyssia Fossorier of UCI defeating her 7-5, 6-3.

De Luna competed against Rimona Rouf of UP in her first match of the day, defeating her in a marathon match 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. De Luna continued to move on towards the finals before finally falling to Dasee Carter 8-1. 

Extra singles matches were played in the invitational. Astle took on Gonzalez Rico of UCI, falling 6-2. Lin fell to Masarikova of YSU 6-3, 7-6(5) and freshman Jacque Dunyon was defeated by Maria Nikitash CSUF 6-3.
