LAS VEGAS (Apr. 29, 2010) Despite winning the doubles point, the No. 4 seeded BYU women’s tennis team dropped a hard fought 2-4 match to No. 5 seed San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the MWC Women’s Tennis Championships, Thursday.

No. 73 BYU won the doubles point as the 40th-ranked tandem of McCall Jones and Megan Price defeated Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, 8-6, at the No. 1 doubles position and the Cougars' Liza Ezhova and Chie Hayaska downed Alicia Aguilar and Olivia Colman (9-7) at No. 3.

“We came out strong in doubles as a team and had some momentum going in to singles play, “ said head coach Joey Johnson. “The girls fought hard in all of their singles matches.”

SDSU tied up the score at 1-1 when Emma Cioffi defeated the Cougars’ Elizaveta Azhova in straight sets at number six singles.

BYU regained the lead 2-1 when No. 40 McCall Jones beat Julia Trunk of SDSU in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 at the number one singles position.

The Aztecs would take back the lead to claim the victory winning the singles matches at the number two, three and four positions.

“They (SDSU) played much better today especially in singles then when we beat them in Provo during the regular conference season. We were only a point or two away from getting the win, we just came up a little short,” added coach Johnson.

Jones will likely receive an invitation to compete in the NCAA tournament in singles and may also compete with teammate Megan Price in doubles. They are ranked 40th nationally. The pairings will be announced next week.

The Cougars end the season with a 9-13 overall record.
