ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — No. 17 BYU women’s track and field closed its weekend at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with 10 All-American honors, including six First Teamers, following Saturday performances highlighted by Claire Seymour and Cierra Tidwell Allphin.
After advancing to her third-consecutive indoor 800-meters final on Friday, Seymour clocked 2:03.18 to finish fourth and threepeat as a First Team All-American in the event. Seymour fourth-place result came as she beat Kennesaw State’s Sarah Hendrick and Valery Tobias of Texas to the finish.
The senior from Modesto, Calif. joins Shea Collinsworth (2015-17) and Lacey Cramer Bleazard (2009-11) as the only BYU 800m runners to collect three-consecutive indoor First Team All-American honors in the event.
"I was proud of the representation we had in women's distance events this weekend," said BYU women's distance coach Diljeet Taylor. The performances from Claire and our distance medley relay team were the highlight of the weekend, as was the valuable experience our freshmen received. I'm looking forward to taking these women into the outdoor season."
Tidwell Allphin cleared 1.82-meters/5-11.5 and finished eighth in the high jump to take home back-to-back indoor First Team honors.
“We had really hoped that Cierra could clear 1.85m today and I know she’s a little bit disappointed but you can’t complain because this was just amazing competition,” said BYU jumps coach Mark Robison. “I thought she performed even better than she did last year and handled the circumstances very well.”
The junior from Gilbert, Ariz. held off jumpers from Cincinnati, Ohio State and Georgia Tech to take the First Team citation. Tidwell Allphin takes home BYU’s 13th all-time women’s indoor high jump All-American honor and became the first Cougar to do so since Lindsey Steele Metcalf in 2004-05.
Sadie Sargent and Lexy Halladay-Lowry picked up Second Team honors as each raced in the 3,000-meters and finished 13th and 15th, respectively.
BYU women’s track and field now turns to the outdoor season with its first meet at Stanford’s Cardinal Classic on March 18.
