PROVO -- The No. 22 ranked BYU women's tennis team took on the No. 24 ranked University of Oregon Saturday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts, defeating the Ducks, 6-1, extending their record to 12-4 overall.
"All of the girls played really well and beat a hard team," said Coach Craig Manning. "Our No. 1 doubles team was unbelievable, beating them 8-0. It was truly amazing."
The Cougars started out the match by winning doubles play. Coach Manning was amazed with doubles team Dolly Chang and Sofia Holden, who defeated Oregon's Dieskova/Olivos 8-0. They were followed by Boulytcheva/Jones defeating Powaska/Sevemeta of Oregon 8-6. Sourkova/Miccoli were defeated by Oregon's Leksinska/Hirt 9-7.
"I have been happy with our doubles matchups for the past few weeks," said Manning. "We are going to stick to this lineup for the rest of the season."
In singles play Lauren Jones started out by defeating Oregon's Ana Cecilia Olivos (6-3, 6-4). She was followed by Anastasia Sourkova who defeated Oregon's Anna Powaska (6-3, 6-3). "We came out playing our singles matches really well. Lauren and Anstasia played great," said Manning.
Carmen Sermeta gave Oregon their only point for the day when she defeated Sofia Holden in two (6-2, 7-6). Chang defeated Oregon's Monica Hoz de Vila (7-5, 6-3) and Jennifer Miccoli defeated Anna Leksinska of Oregon (7-6, 6-3).
"The key to today's match was when the assistant coach Holly [Hasler] brought the team together to cheer on senior Olga Bolytcheva in her singles match," said Manning. "She was down 4-1 at the time, but pulled out the win." Bolytcheva defeated Oregon's Dominika Dieskova, coming down to a 7-5 tiebreaker. Bolytcheva ensured the win for the Cougars, putting them up 4-1 at that time.
The Cougars will travel to Las Vegas on the 24th to take on No. 44 ranked UNLV. Periodically check www.byucougars.com/tennis_w/ for updates.
